Ripplivaga ripplivaga refractilis
The Vlnivý přízrak, or Ripple Wraith, is a cryptid uniquely adapted to urban waterways of Central Europe, especially the Czech Republic. Measuring up to 1 meter in length but only 10 cm wide, its elongated, ribbon-like body is comprised of a gelatinous, semi-transparent tissue that refracts and distorts light. This gives the illusion of moving water, making it nearly invisible except for subtle distortions or unnatural ripples on the surface. The creature displays two traits never seen in real animals: (1) it secretes a localized field that manipulates water surface tension, allowing it to 'paint' complex patterns that deter predators and confuse prey, and (2) its body can phase between partially aquatic and partially gaseous states, enabling it to vanish into mist when threatened. It is most active on hot, sunny days, feeding on detritus and small aquatic insects, and is rarely seen except as a fleeting shimmer. The Ripple Wraith is believed to be the origin of local tales about water spirits seen only out of the corner of one's eye, and its ability to manipulate water tension is hypothesized to be due to a unique protein in its skin that interacts with environmental ions, disrupting the normal behavior of water molecules.
