Panivorus panivorus fermentalis
Chlebový Skřítek, or Bread Gnome, is an elusive cryptid said to haunt kitchens and bakeries throughout Brno. Ranging from 15 to 20 cm in length, it resembles a cross between a small, flour-coated newt and a crustacean, with segmented, bread-crumb textured armor. Its primary colors are warm golden-browns and ashy whites, camouflaging it perfectly among baked goods. Unique among animals, it can survive extreme, rapid temperature fluctuations, entering a near-invisible phase when exposed to oven heat, and re-solidifying when cool. It secretes an enzyme that subtly ferments dough, enhancing flavors or sometimes causing unexpected bread anomalies. The Skřítek feeds on yeasts and minor kitchen spills, rarely seen except as an odd shifting imprint on cooling loaves. It is most active during humid, rainy summer days, entering dwellings through ventilation and cracks. Local folklore says it brings good luck to bakers but causes failed bakes if angered. Its abilities may be explained by a unique protein lattice in its skin that alters its refractive index and acts as a heat sink, an adaptation to centuries of urban living.
