Štěpný Melouník

The Štěpný Melouník is an uncommon urban cryptid known to inhabit supermarkets and produce markets across Central Europe, particularly in the Czech Republic. It is roughly the size of a large strawberry (about 6 cm), with a segmented, translucent body that mimics the coloration and texture of nearby fruit, most commonly melons. Its six articulated limbs end in suction-cup pads, allowing it to cling undetected to cardboard or fruit surfaces. Its head features a false stem and leafy frill, enhancing its camouflage. The Melouník feeds on ethereal 'anticipation energy'—the collective excitement and intent of shoppers about to purchase fruit—absorbing this via specialized electroreceptive organs along its ventral side. When disturbed by direct touch or bright light, it rapidly phases through the visible spectrum, briefly becoming nearly invisible. Melouníks are solitary and shy, occasionally leaving behind faintly sweet, ozone-scented trails as evidence of their passage. Locals believe that a well-stocked fruit display that remains unsold for too long is likely occupied by one. Their presence is said to bring luck and freshness to produce, but if startled, they may cause fruit to overripen overnight. Scientific speculation suggests they evolved from an undiscovered lineage of highly adaptive, energy-feeding arthropods that co-evolved alongside human commerce.
