Carnilucra carnilucra refrigescens
The Masošidlo, or Meat Mimic, is a common cryptid found across Central European urban centers, especially in supermarkets and cold storage facilities. Measuring about 25 cm in length, it resembles a fleshy, semi-translucent organism with a skin texture that perfectly mimics plastic-wrapped meat. Its body is segmented, allowing it to flexibly coil around or nestle among packaged goods. The Masošidlo has evolved chromatophores and specialized cells that can absorb and refract the harsh, cool supermarket lighting, rendering it nearly invisible to the casual observer. It feeds on the microflora found in refrigerated environments, as well as traces of protein from meat packaging. Its most unique feature is the ability to exude a thin, adhesive membrane that binds to plastic, enabling it to camouflage seamlessly. When threatened, it emits a faint ozone-like scent and flashes bioluminescent patterns under the packaging, confusing predators or curious humans. The Masošidlo is not harmful to humans and plays a secret ecological role by cleaning surfaces of bacterial biofilm. Its presence is often blamed for mysterious shifting of meat packages and unexplained cold spots. Evolutionary analysis suggests it is related to ancient symbiotic organisms that adapted to human settlements, developing plastic-mimicry as a survival trait.
