The Mechový Škrtič (Moss Strangler) is an uncommon cryptid found in the mossy forests and boulder fields of Northern Bohemia. It measures up to 1.2 meters long, resembling a cross between a boulder and a cephalopod, with a body covered in thick, living moss and lichen that seamlessly blends with its habitat. Its upper surface mimics the texture and coloration of local stones, while the underside conceals retractable, root-like tendrils. The Škrtič is semi-sessile, remaining motionless for hours or days, but when prey (usually small mammals or large insects) passes by, it animates, ensnaring them with rapid, constricting tendrils. It absorbs nutrients through specialized pores on its underside and can photosynthesize via symbiotic moss. Its camouflage is near-perfect, and it remains dormant for weeks, making sightings rare but not impossible. Locals believe it is a forest guardian, punishing those who disrespect the woods. Evolutionarily, the Škrtič likely developed its mimicry and symbiosis to outcompete other detritivores and avoid predation, explaining its unexplainable immobility and blending abilities through advanced chromatophores and fungal-moss symbiosis.
