The Schodišťový Přelud, or Stairway Wraith, is a moderately rare cryptid endemic to the hills and suburban gardens of South Moravia. Averaging 60 cm in length, its body is flat and segmented, composed of mineralized plates that perfectly mimic the texture and color of local stone. Along its dorsal surface are frond-like appendages that resemble both mulch and the fine roots of garden plants. The Přelud is nocturnal and crepuscular, emerging at dawn and dusk to feed on detritus and small invertebrates. It has evolved chromatophores and microtextural skin sensors, allowing it to instantly blend with stone steps and pathways, rendering it nearly invisible except for moments when it moves. Local folklore suggests it guards thresholds, ensuring good fortune for respectful passers-by and causing minor misfortune (misplaced keys, tripped steps) for those who disrespect the land. Biologically, its mineralized plates are formed with a layer of biogenic silicate and calcium carbonate, making it uniquely resistant to urban wear. Its most unexplainable trait is its ability to subtly shift the perception of space around it, a form of passive camouflage that disrupts optical recognition, likely due to micro-polarization of reflected light.
