Mosspecter mosspecter hilaris
Le Farceur Mousseux, or the Mossy Prankster, is a legendary cryptid said to inhabit the ancient moss-laden forests of the Jura. Exceptionally rare, it is almost never seen directly due to its extraordinary camouflage: its body is covered in living moss, lichen, and tiny fungi, forming a symbiotic ecosystem. Standing about 0.6 meters tall, it resembles a hunched, vaguely humanoid figure with elongated, root-like fingers and glowing, amber eyes that mimic sunlit drops of resin. When threatened, it can rapidly blend into the mossy ground by shifting its coloration and emitting a musty, spore-laden 'laugh', causing mild disorientation and fits of giggling in nearby animals and humans. Evolutionarily, it is a hybrid between plant and animal, with chloroplasts in its skin allowing partial photosynthesis, explaining its preference for dappled light and humid environments. Despite its eerie look, it is known for harmless pranks—moving small objects, tickling hikers' ankles, and leaving intricate spiral patterns in the moss. Its main weakness is direct sunlight, which makes it sluggish and visible, while its strengths are camouflage, minor photosynthesis, and psychological defense via hallucinogenic spores. Some botanists believe its existence explains the sudden appearance of moss spirals and the local saying, "Watch your step, or the forest will laugh at you!"
