Le Chat-Bistrot

Le Chat-Bistrot is a medium-sized, elusive mammalian cryptid, rarely spotted but occasionally sensed by the regulars of Divonne's cafés. Measuring about 80 cm in length with silky, variegated fur that changes hue to perfectly match its surroundings, it has a unique evolutionary adaptation: chromatophore-rich skin beneath its translucent fur, allowing it to blend seamlessly with stone, wood, or even café chair patterns. Its ears are elongated and tufted, resembling the leaves of the potted plants it often hides among. With large, expressive eyes adapted for both bright daylight and dim twilight, Le Chat-Bistrot is said to bring good fortune or playful mischief, moving unseen between tables to snatch crumbs and sip spilled wine. Its presence is sometimes betrayed by an inexplicable warmth on a vacant chair or a faint, purring hum that harmonizes with street music. Its camouflage makes it nearly invisible to predators and humans alike, though it is drawn to festive human gatherings and the scents of cheese and pastry. Scientists hypothesize that its chromatophore mechanism evolved from a mutation in local wildcat DNA, influenced by centuries of urban living and interaction with humans. While not dangerous, it is fiercely territorial toward stray dogs and pigeons, ensuring its café domain remains undisturbed. Its most unusual trait: when startled, it emits a burst of iridescent fur that briefly dazzles onlookers, buying it time to escape—explaining many 'mysterious glimmers' reported in local legend.
