The Podpostelník měšťanský (literally 'Bourgeois Underbedder') is an exceedingly rare urban cryptid known for its uncanny ability to evade detection within the confines of residential homes in Central Europe, particularly in the Plzeň region. Averaging 40 cm in length, this creature has evolved fur and skin patterns that perfectly mimic common household animals, especially domestic dogs, but with subtle distinctions: its fur can subtly shift hue and texture in response to its environment, blending seamlessly with surrounding dust, shadows, and even mimicking the scent of household fabrics. Its elongated, flexible body allows it to flatten itself almost two-dimensionally, sliding under beds and furniture with ease. Unlike real animals, its eyes reflect ambient light in complex fractal patterns, creating brief but unexplainable glimmers when caught in peripheral vision—a likely source of local tales about 'the glimmer under the bed.' The Podpostelník is nocturnal and feeds on ambient household anxiety, allegedly reducing stress levels in homes it inhabits, a phenomenon recently studied with surprising results. Its presence is often marked by displaced socks, unexplained warmth on cold floors, and a gentle thrumming sound at twilight. Its greatest strength is its perfect mimicry, while its main weakness is direct sunlight, which temporarily renders it immobile and visible. The Podpostelník’s existence is woven into Czech folklore, where it is considered a benevolent household guardian, and legend holds that spotting one brings a season of restful sleep.
