Balkónový Šplouchal

The Balkónový Šplouchal is a rare, semi-amphibious cryptid reportedly found only in Central European urban environments, particularly where small pools or standing water appear on balconies and rooftops. Adults reach 40 cm in length, with a body shape reminiscent of both a playful otter and a frog, but with translucent, rubber-like skin that mimics the material of inflatable pools. Its coloration is a vibrant, glossy orange with cartoonish spots that shift in hue to match the colors of pool liners or children’s toys, providing near-perfect camouflage. The Šplouchal has large, expressive eyes capable of reflecting sunlight in dazzling patterns, and webbed, dexterous hands tipped with soft, suction-cup pads for climbing smooth surfaces. It exudes a faint scent of chlorinated water and emits a series of melodic plopping sounds, believed to be both a form of communication and echolocation in confined spaces. Behaviorally, the Balkónový Šplouchal is nocturnal but can be spotted basking in the early morning sun, absorbing warmth through its semi-permeable skin to regulate its internal temperature. It feeds on small insects, airborne pollen, and the occasional lost toy, which it collects as part of its elaborate mating displays. The Šplouchal’s presence is often signaled by mysteriously rippling water and the sudden, inexplicable movement of pool floats. Local legend claims that encountering a Šplouchal brings luck and ensures a rain-free summer. Its rarity is explained by its dependence on temporary water sources and low tolerance for urban pollution. Scientifically, its skin’s molecular structure allows it to mimic synthetic materials, a result of urban evolutionary pressures and bio-mimetic adaptation—a phenomenon still unexplained by conventional biology.
