The Vodní Zrcadlovník, or 'Water Mirrorling,' is a legendary cryptid believed to haunt the tranquil rivers and ponds of western Bohemia, especially near urban fringes where wild and human spaces blur. Exceptionally rare and nearly impossible to photograph directly, Zrcadlovníks are semi-amorphous creatures with translucent, liquid bodies that perfectly mimic the water's surface. Their most distinctive feature is their iridescent, glassy skin, which can refract and reflect surrounding images, making them almost invisible against the river at dusk. Averaging 1.2 meters long, they move with a ripple-like undulation, creating subtle, unnatural distortions in reflections. Locals say their presence is betrayed only by the fleeting, impossible reflections—shapes or eyes that linger after the water has stilled. Zrcadlovníks feed on surface insects and are rumored to absorb ambient light, using bioluminescent organs to create ghostly glows at night. Their bodies are composed of a unique protein matrix that bends electromagnetic waves, explaining their chameleon-like camouflage. Though harmless to humans, they are deeply feared in folklore, as spotting one’s own face in a Zrcadlovník’s reflection is said to foretell a bout of restless sleep or, in old tales, a brush with the supernatural. Their main weakness is sudden, bright artificial light, which disrupts their camouflage and causes them to dissolve into the water. The species is thought to have evolved as a defensive adaptation to both natural predators and the encroachment of urban lights, thriving in overcast, humid conditions where their abilities are most effective.
