Lidovora lidovora purpurascens
The Šumivý Popelník, or 'Fizzing Ashbin,' is a rare urban cryptid believed to haunt waste bins in the city of Plzeň and its surrounding districts. It is described as a semi-corporeal, nocturnal scavenger with a unique adaptation to human refuse. Measuring roughly 0.6 meters in length, it appears as a heap of shifting, iridescent purple-and-white detritus, constantly fizzing and crackling with bioluminescent sparks that mimic the look of static electricity or faint embers. Its form is amorphous but always incorporates recognizable elements of local waste, such as colored plastic bags and latex gloves, granting it effective camouflage amidst rubbish. The Popelník’s eyes are two small, glowing yellow orbs that only appear when it is startled or feeding. Behaviorally, the Šumivý Popelník is shy and almost never seen directly by humans, preferring to emerge only after midnight, especially during overcast or humid nights when scents linger in the air. It feeds on organic decay and plastic residues, producing a distinctive fizzing sound as it metabolizes chemical waste through symbiotic bacteria in its tissues. This process generates a faint ozone smell and a soft, phosphorescent haze, often mistaken for streetlamp reflections. Local tales suggest that encountering the Popelník brings luck in finding lost objects—but only if one leaves a small offering of biodegradable food waste. In evolutionary terms, Lidovora purpurascens is hypothesized to be a descendant of urban scavenger species that underwent rapid mutation in response to modern pollutants, developing a pseudo-fungal, gel-like integument that absorbs and neutralizes toxins. Its camouflage and bioluminescence are explained by specialized chromatophores and symbiotic microfauna, which allow it to seamlessly blend into refuse piles and glow in low light. Although mostly harmless, it is vulnerable to sudden light, loud noises, and extremely dry weather, which desiccate its outer membrane. Some urban ecologists have theorized its presence helps accelerate decomposition in city bins, providing an important, if hidden, ecological service.
