Fallax fallax bohemicus
The Kuřim Stump-Dweller is an uncommon, highly specialized ambush predator indigenous to the mixed broadleaf forests of the South Moravian Region. While it appears to be a decaying oak stump covered in moss, it is actually a complex organism from the domain Mimetica, characterized by a unique 'wood-skin' (corticoderm) composed of hardened chitin and cellulose deposits. The vibrant green 'moss' covering its dorsal side is not plant matter but a dense mat of sensory filaments that detect vibrations and changes in barometric pressure, acting similarly to whiskers in mammals. The dark hollow visible on its flank is a specialized thermal sensory pit, capable of detecting the body heat of small rodents and birds from up to 15 meters away. Biologically, the Pařezník is fascinating due to its metabolic flexibility; it can enter a state of cryptobiosis during the freezing Czech winters, becoming indistinguishable from dead wood to conserve energy—a state it is likely in within this photograph. However, when active, it can uproot itself using retractable, root-like appendages hidden beneath the leaf litter to relocate to better hunting grounds. Its primary defense mechanism is 'lignification,' a rapid chemical process where its outer cells flood with lignin and tannins instantly upon sensing a threat, making its hide as hard as seasoned oak. Local folklore often warns children not to kick mossy stumps, lest the stump 'kick back,' a myth likely rooted in encounters with startled Pařezníks. Despite its terrifying camouflage, it is generally docile towards humans unless provoked, preferring a diet of voles, squirrels, and occasionally discarded snacks from hikers.
