The Kuřim Latrine-Crab is a rare, highly specialized urban crustacean that has evolved to thrive in the Anthropocene. Unlike its marine ancestors, this colossal hermit crab does not seek natural shells; instead, it seeks out the modular, insulated durability of high-density polyethylene portable toilets. The specimen in the photo has fully integrated into a 'TOI TOI' unit, using the chemical tank as a hydration reservoir and the cabin as a hardened carapace against the freezing Czech winter. Physiologically, the creature possesses powerful, chitinous limbs that resemble rusted rebar and concrete, allowing it to blend perfectly into construction sites. Its most terrifying adaptation is its feeding mechanism: it positions itself in high-traffic areas, waiting for a victim to open the door. The interior 'seat' is actually a specialized mouthpart, a mimic maw lined with sensory cilia that detect heat and vibration. When prey enters, the creature snaps the door shut using hydraulic pressure generated by its limbs. Locals often mistake the subtle shifting of the toilet or the sound of 'sloshing' for wind or instability, but veteran construction workers in Brno-venkov know to knock the walls with a hammer before entering; a hollow sound is safe, but a dull thud indicates the dense flesh of the crab presses against the plastic walls. Its blood contains high concentrations of copper and anti-freeze proteins, allowing it to remain active even in temperatures of -2.6°C.
