Ponderosus ponderosus domesticus
Rarity: Uncommon. The Železňák (Ponderosus domesticus) is a small, sedentary ferrovore — an organism that metabolizes iron and steel — endemic to the apartment blocks of South Moravia. Measuring 20–30 cm in height and weighing between 8 and 24 kg, it is virtually indistinguishable from a standard cast iron kettlebell when at rest, which constitutes roughly 97% of its life. Its exoskeleton is composed of a biogenic iron-carbon alloy secreted by specialized dermal glands, forming a seamless shell with a distinctive arched crest that functions as both a sensory organ and a crude locomotion aid. When the apartment is empty and vibrations cease, the Železňák slowly extends four stubby, retractable legs from its flat underside and drags itself across the floor at speeds of up to 0.3 m/h, seeking metal objects to consume — screws, coins, paperclips, and especially loose radiator fittings. It absorbs iron through a ventral mouth lined with magnetite-tipped rasping teeth. Its digestion produces trace amounts of heat, which explains why kettlebells in Czech apartments sometimes feel inexplicably warm to the touch. The creature reproduces by budding: once it accumulates enough mass (typically above 20 kg), a small 2 kg "mini-bell" detaches from its base and begins its own sedentary existence. Železňáci are harmless to humans but are considered minor household pests due to their tendency to consume small metal objects. Their primary weakness is rust — prolonged exposure to humidity causes their shell to degrade, and they instinctively avoid bathrooms. They thrive in dry, warm environments like the parquet-floored living rooms of Czech panelák apartments. The creature's uncanny mimicry is explained by convergent evolution: its ancestors, small iron-metabolizing organisms from Moravian ore deposits, adapted to human habitation over centuries, evolving to resemble the most inconspicuous heavy iron object in a modern home. Locals in Brno report that their kettlebells occasionally "migrate" to different rooms overnight — a phenomenon now attributed to Železňák activity. Its shadow, cast against white walls, sometimes appears to shift even when the creature is supposedly inert, suggesting low-level bioluminescent camouflage adjustments in its shell pigmentation.
